RASC St. John's Centre Monthly Meeting
September 19, 2001

Location: Marine Institute Planetarium, MUN

Time: 8:00 pm

Present: 19

1. Fred's Introduction.

2. Quick Reports. Robert Babb on Star-B-Que success. Lots of people (over 200) and the public was pleased. Garry Dymond on the GA: fees will go up $4. There were many talks and also workshops for teachers. He put forth our proposal for a GA in 2004 to coincide with the Venus transit and possibly an IAU plaque in commemoration of the Harvard expedition in 1761 to St. John's. Garry got a good response to this, but decisions are only made 2 years prior to the date. It would seem the date will be July 1 and not the actual date of the transit (travel plans).

3. Observing. Ben: observed Mars several times. Garry saw detail on Mars several times in June before the big storm, notably some clouds and the polar ice cap. Many members observed the naked eye comet (barely) in Lyra, particularly at Star-B-Que.

4. Fred Again. Mentioned some people with the Natural History Society suggested we should have a get-together before Christmas. This would replace our usual wine and cheese (it would be much the same thing). [These would be many of the same groups we would work with at the Butterpot project, so I think it would be a good idea.]

5. Garry's Show. Garry took us on a trip of the sky and answered people's questions. After this, he played a free NASA educational slide show about the Cassini mission.
